Signs Symptoms Characteristics of Autism
71Signs of Autism in infants
Signs of Autism in infants is not as easily diagnosed as it is in children. The Signs and Symptoms of Autism are more obvious and usually diagnosed when the child is between two and three years of age, Although extensive research is being carried out to try to identify Autism in infants. The earlier it is diagnosed the sooner the child can receive treatment.
It is thought that by comparing the development of normal infants from six months old to the age of two, subtle differences can be noted with the Autistic infant.First of all we will look at what development is expected of infants from the age of six months old.
At six months a child will start to smile.
At nine months a child will recognise when a parent walks into the room, will reciprocate a smile.
At 12 months a child will begin pointing at or to objects to draw attention to the object. Also at this stage the child will copy other actions ie. waving, clapping etc.Babbling and cooing are the familiar sounds the child will be making.
At sixteen to eighteen months the child will begin using words.
At 2 the child will be using two word phrases.
Obviously all children are different and this timetable allows for slight variations. However it appears that a child with Autism does not display this development.
Symptoms of Autism
The symptoms of Autism are more obvious as a child develops. Usually between the age of 24 months to thirty six months the symptoms of Autism are more obvious. Most parents have been through the stage of the "terrible twos" A child with Autism can have violent tantrums for no apparent reason. They will react unusually to certain objects, for example a teddy bear that may feel soft and cuddly can create an autistic child to react by screaming and shouting as if it is being hurt by the object.
Other signs the child may develop is the lack of eye to eye contact and the inability to interact with other children or even their own parents. Every parent wants to hold, kiss and cuddle their child, again this can be distressing to the autistic child who does not like to be touched. They can also seem very aloof and even give the impression of being deaf by ignoring those around them.
It often sems that an Autistic child is in a world of their own and that they want no contact with the outside world.
